IAS Fellows’ Public Lecture – Unearthing the Dark Side of the House: investigating domestic violence in Greco-Roman Egypt, by Dr Youssri Abdelwahed (Minia University)

November 14, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

IAS Fellows’ Public Lecture by Dr Youssri Abdelwahed (Minia University)

Abstract

This lecture explores the hidden tales of domestic violence in ancient Egypt, as revealed by Greek papyri originating from Greco-Roman Egypt between the fourth century BC and the fourth century AD. By examining various forms of violence, such as bia, loidoria, and hybris, the lecture aims to shed light on the harsh realities of domestic life in the Greco-Romano-Egyptian society. It also delves into the origins and locations of domestic violence, as well as the individuals involved, the weapons used, and the timing of these abusive acts. Through this analysis, it will be demonstrated how violence served as a means of social interaction in Greco-Roman Egypt.

This lecture is free and open to all. Registration is not required to attend in person.
