IAS Fellows’ Seminar – Fiction, Anticipation, and Proleptic Memory

February 26 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

IAS Fellows’ Seminar by Dr Avishek Parui (Indian Institute of Technology Madras)

This seminar will aim to examine how the medium of fiction is uniquely equipped to represent memory and anticipation as entangled experiences. Drawing on studies in forms and techniques in fiction as well as theories in memory studies, this talk will offer a reading of proleptic memory, connecting the method of prolepsis in fictional representations and anticipatory memory in personal and collective forms of remembering. In doing so, the seminar will try to illustrate how the figurative quality and self-reflexivity in fiction – shaping representations of cultural materiality as well as psychological interiority – are specially suited to re-create as well as anticipate complex and sometimes contesting forms of spatiotemporality and in the process offer original models to study and examine memory.

Places are limited and so any academic colleagues or students interested in attending in person should register. Registration form here.
