IAS Fellows’ Virtual Public Lecture – Memory and Enlightenment: Teesdale in the 1790s

December 2, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Virtual Public Lecture by  Professor Alan Atkinson, University of Sydney and University of Western Australia

Abstract

Professor Alan Atkinson will try to use a single monthly publication, the Stockton Bee, published 1793-95, to penetrate a network of social interaction in lower Teesdale at a particularly interesting moment in European history.  The Bee fed on question-and-answer dialogue among its readers, and it was patronised mainly by the young.  The pattern that emerges has many dimensions, from collective memory to literary conceit, from gender to geography, and all of it fraught with local accent and individual voice.
