IAS Workshop – Methods for studying social media: meaning making and multimodality, workshop with Prof Katrin Tiidenberg

If your research questions suggest you inquire into people’s social media practices, explore what else they do, when they are scrolling, posting, commenting, lurking, sharing or liking, or ponder how meaning is made with (visual) social media content, you are invited to a 2-hour workshop with Katrin Tiidenberg. After a brief introduction into her ways of thinking about and with social media content and of some tactics and methods for analyzing visual social media content that Katrin has developed over the past 10 years and used in a variety of her own research projects, we will do some hands-on experimentation (you can bring content you’d like to analyze, or we can provide you with sample material) and collaborative workshopping of the experience.
This workshop is organised as part of the IAS major research project ‘Risks to Youth and Studenthood in Digital Spaces’ (Epiphany 2023), led by Dr Rille Raaper and Prof Mariann Hardey at Durham University. Katrin Tiidenberg is a Professor of Participatory Culture at the Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School of Tallinn University, Estonia. She is the author and editor of multiple books on social media, digital cultures and research methods, including, most recently “Tumblr” (2021, co-authored by Natalie Ann Hendry and Crystal Abidin), “Sex and Social Media” (2020, co-authored by Emily van der Nagel), “Selfies, why we love (and hate) them,” the multiple award winning “Making sense of the Datafied World: a Methodological Guide” (2020, in Estonian, co-edited with Anu Masso and Andra Siibak) and “Metaphors of Internet: Ways of Being in the Age of Ubiquity” (2020, co-edited with Annette Markham).
