The Institute of Advanced Study is the umbrella for a wide range of activities and events located in and around Durham University. Each year the core work of the IAS revolves around the activities of its annual cohort of 20 Fellows drawn. IAS Fellows participate in a wide range of events including seminars, workshops, conferences, exhibitions, and public lectures.
The range of events that are organised and/or sponsored by the IAS are all intended to either advance the research of the individual Fellows and that of researchers at Durham or, in the case of events such as the art exhibitions, public debates and public lectures that the IAS organises or supports, to inform an interested public who want to learn more about the cutting-edge research that is carried out at Durham and elsewhere in the world.
